Tomorrow the 10th of April the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will be released on the global market. One of the newest features of the S6 and its double edged suave partner along with the latest iPhone 6 and 6 plus for that matter is Wifi Calling. Not all the networks in the UK currently support Wifi calling but EE are currently the only network pathing the way forwards and the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the edge are its centre stage product for featuring Wireless calling which arrives with the SGS6/edge tomorrow!

How Does It Work?

Just so there is no confusion, lets get the FACT out of the way first. Using Wifi Calling will not only subtract from your data but will actually be deducted from your minutes. So if you were under the assumptive illusion that you could get a contract with minimal minutes and just make calls from home on Wifi all day you’d be wrong and would inccure massive charges for going over your minutes. We spoke to EE to confirm this. We also asked what would happen if we brought the SGS6/edge directly from Samsung and used our current EE Mobile pay monthly Sim, would we still be able to use wifi calling? The answer from EE was an affirmative yes. Yet there have been reports that this will not be the case so the only real way we will get to the bottom of this is when we have the S6 edge in our hands to review and play with, probably for next month. After that we plan for a review and a competition give away for the Sony Xperia Aqua M4. Stay tuned.

Who Is Wifi Calling For?

Wifi calling is for people that recieve a weak signal from their Network. So if your current signal from EE (which covers 80%) of the UK is currently low and wavering you could simply turn on Wifi calling from your handset and make a clearer call- Using your minutes. However if you leave the foundations and radius of your wifi the call will suddenly drop and you’ll have to make another using conventional methods. EE is currently planning and working to better Wifi calling with seamless integration between Wifi and network calls without the line dropping and cutting off, however this seamless transfer will only be available later in the year when EE launches VoLTE (Voice Over LTE)

Which Networks Support Wifi Calling?

At the moment in the UK as of tomorrow EE will be the only network to feature wifi calling but Vodafone arn’t far behind the tracks of EE and will themselves feature wifi calling and the seamless connection transition of VoLTE later in the summer. The network’s Three and o2 already allow for calls over your wifi connection with their ‘Intouch’ and ‘TU Go’ apps which offer similar functionality and service and are programed effectively to evolve with VoLTE technology. Both networks, like EE will charge for using Wifi calling dictated by your tarrif.

Which Phones Can Use Wifi Calling?

As of the moment. The Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5S, 5C and Microsoft Lumia 640 are all equipped with the essentials for wifi calling! So with that explained and breifly touched upon I hope we’ve answered any questions you might have had. Yet if you have any further questions or interest regarding wifi calling why not leave a comment or contact us. As usual thank you so much for reading our blog, please share if you find it valuable and have an excellent evening!
